In January, Laura Ferrario, Senior Vendor Manager at Aglatech14, was interviewed by Radio StoryTime, an integrated communication format that combines radio, web, and social media to share the stories of professionals, entrepreneurs, and organizations across Italy. The interview provided an opportunity to explore how this role is carried out in practice at Aglatech14 and which skills are essential to address future challenges.<\/p>\n

The Vendor Manager\u2019s Mission: Finding the Perfect Match<\/h3>\n

During the interview, Laura spoke about her professional journey and how she entered the world of language services, eventually becoming Senior Vendor Manager at Aglatech14. Hers is a multifaceted role that ranges from recruiting to managing relationships with external collaborators in all their aspects, including nurturing the community of linguists.<\/p>\n

The greatest satisfaction lies in finding the perfect match between linguist and project<\/strong>, and in building and cultivating personal relationships based on trust and mutual respect. However, the job also presents significant challenges. Working with very different individuals requires an extraordinary ability to adapt, both to a constantly evolving market and to the various internal and external stakeholders involved. Collaboration with other company departments, especially those coordinating projects, is essential to ensure project success and client satisfaction. Negotiation in its broadest sense is also a constant element of daily work.<\/p>\n

Empathy and Diplomacy: Key Skills for the Vendor Manager in the language industry<\/h3>\n

What does it mean to be a Vendor Manager in today\u2019s language industry? According to Laura, the role requires skills that go far beyond technical expertise. Empathy and diplomacy<\/strong> are fundamental, as are mediation<\/strong> skills and flexibility<\/strong> in dealing with ever-changing situations.<\/p>\n

The interview also looked to the future, focusing on the qualities tomorrow\u2019s freelance linguist<\/strong> will need to possess. In addition to traditional linguistic skills, developing cross-functional and technological competencies will be essential. Flexibility and resilience in the face of change will become defining traits in a market increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence and new technologies.<\/p>\n

A central theme of the interview was networking<\/strong> and its strategic value for freelancers in the language sector. It is a LinkedIn community that brings together all Aglatech14 freelance collaborators. Within this space, members exchange experiences and advice, discuss work-related topics as well as lighter subjects, and meet in person twice a year in different cities across Italy.<\/p>\n

Other examples mentioned include LocLunch, Women in Localization events, and ELIA Together, which is currently taking place in Porto. Laura is attending the event at this very moment as a representative of Aglatech14, an important opportunity to engage with leading players in the European language services industry.<\/p>\n

Laura Ferrario: “<\/em>Sharing my experience as a Vendor Manager in the language services industry on Radio Story Time was both stimulating and, in some ways, revealing.<\/em><\/p>\n

During the interview, I explained how my role involves selecting and supporting linguists and language service providers around the world. Above all, however, I wanted to emphasize one key aspect: this is, first and foremost, a deeply human job.<\/em><\/p>\n

Empathy is an indispensable skill. Every linguist we collaborate with has a unique cultural, professional, and personal background. Understanding their needs, listening to their challenges, and recognizing their strengths and aspirations allows us to build solid, long-lasting relationships. An effective Vendor Manager does not simply evaluate performance and quality. The ability to put oneself in others\u2019 shoes, especially in moments of pressure or difficulty, is essential. In an industry characterized by tight deadlines and constant change, attention to the human dimension makes the difference between a simple collaboration and a valuable partnership.<\/em><\/p>\n

During the broadcast, we also reflected on how the role of the linguist is evolving. The professional of the future will need strong resilience, meaning the ability to navigate a transforming market increasingly shaped by technologies such as artificial intelligence. Resilience means not merely enduring change, but managing it. It requires continuously updating one\u2019s skills, diversifying the services offered, and investing in ongoing training.<\/em><\/p>\n

Flexibility and adaptability will be equally crucial. The linguist of the future will not be just a translator, but a linguistic and cultural consultant, capable of working on digital platforms and understanding clients\u2019 business dynamics. Open-mindedness and a willingness to experiment with new tools will represent a decisive competitive advantage.”<\/em><\/p>\n
